Freedom Park is one of many informal settlements that spring up around mining shafts.  Men may come many miles from home to work for one of the platinum, gold, diamond, or coal mines.  Entire families of refugees may settle in these tiny homes for years.  The South African government has begun building inexpensive homes in an attempt to eliminate the informal settlements, but new families move into the shacks as soon as someone moves out to live in a home purchased from the government.  It seems never-ending.
